When Setting Stones into Jewellery

Example screenshot of setting a stone into selected jewellery.

Upon pressing “Add Stones” to a piece of jewellery, you’ll first be prompted to select an unset stone location. Select one.

For stone type, select your gemstone and origin of choice. The options presented will vary depending on the piece of jewellery that you’re setting and the gemstones that are available.

The options for origin can be “Genuine”, “Lab Created” or “Imitation”.

  • “Genuine” gems formed naturally and were mined from the ground.

  • “Lab Created” gems are compositionally identical and usually free of imperfections.

  • “Imitation” gems bare a resemblance to genuine, but are not compositionally the same. The exact material they’re made of varies.

“Notable Gems” are also sometimes available. They are genuine gems.

After selecting a gemstone type, a list of available stones is shown. All of the listed stones will fit your jewellery. Most gemstones do not have the equivalent of a grading report, but many (including all “Notable Gems”) have a product page offering a zoomed in 360° view.

Return to the list of available stones. To choose the one you want, click “Set” next to your choice. You’ll be returned to the list of unset stone locations in your piece of jewellery.

Repeat the above steps for each unset stone location.

Once all stones are set, you’re ready to place an order.

Loose Gemstones

Our online shop's loose gemstone landing page.

When you click on “Gems, Pearls & Birthstones” in our Shop, our supplier’s gemstone landing page will open.

Navigating loose gemstones is easier than navigating loose diamonds. Understanding our supplier’s key terms will help though:

  • Calibrated Faceted: This is what most people are looking for; faceted gemstones categorized by type and size. “Faceted” stones have been cut to have faces like a traditional diamond.

  • Calibrated Cabochon: Cabochon gemstones categorized by type and size. “Cabochon” stones have been polished round instead of cut to have faces.

  • Earth to Market: All stones in this category have a known origin.

  • Notable Gems: "Notable" as determined by our supplier, including unique cuts, perfectly matched pairs, large sizes and unusual stone types.

  • Moissanite: Lab-grown moissanite stones.

  • Birthstones: Gemstones sorted as birthstones by month.

  • Gemstone Parcels: Bulk orders of gemstones, sold by carat weight. Not really of interest to the average person.

  • Precision-Cut Sapphires: These sapphires are available in more specific sizes than those found in the “Calibrated Faceted” category. Not really of interest to the average person.

  • Brand Name: Click here if you’re looking for brand names like Swarovski Gemstones (TM).

  • Specialty: Think of this as the ‘everything else’ category.
